Cities in India

Initiated in 2005, the project is unfolding in India in the cities of Nagpur and Bhubaneswar. The project has mobilised a wide variety of key partners to become the first platform linking local governments and institutions to pursue the promotion and generation of renewable energy and energy efficiency at the local level.

Achievements

Some of the achievements of the project so far include the enthusiastic commitment of the cities to engage in the process of becoming a 'Model Community', in pursuit of which, two 'Resource Centre' in each community have been established. These centres located inside areas frequented by citizens at the city hall are attracting many visitors, school groups and private companies to learn about Local Renewables.

The next steps

The next step is the creation of an Action Plan for the implementation of policies in line with the objectives of Local Renewables.

Project Components

City work

The following cities are committed to become 'Model Communities':

Bhubaneswar, Orissa State, India

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu State, India

Nagpur, Maharastra State, India

The cities are using a multi-pronged approach towards becoming a 'Model Community'. They concurrently actively seek political support for the initiative, engage their citizens in awareness activities and consult  stakeholders groups with interest in Local Renewables.
